Hello Mastodon admins. I'm looking for input on how to prevent spam. We were overrun during the holidays when I was distracted by other things. I have anti-spam turned on but it doesn't seem to do anything. What do you do (besides active moderation)?

I'm not much of a metalhead these days, although I definitely was as a teenager. The only band I really seem to keep coming back to is Iron Maiden.

I don't know what it is about them I dig. They are frequently over-the-top and a bit silly but have an almost wholesome authenticity to them that I'm not aware of in any other act.

Anyway, I'm probably not telling any Maiden fan anything they don't know, so I'm going back to my work, accompanied by The Number of the Beast.

Phizzy has had a massive morning already. She's moved from her blanket to her cushion.

Hey folks, I've gotten some really good reading recommendations on here in the past, so let's give this another whirl.

Looking for science fiction and/or fantasy book reccos. Some authors who I've read recently include:
Susanna Clarke
Robert Jackson Bennett
N.K. Jemesin
Charles Stross
Malka Older
Arkady Martine
Kameron Hurley
Charlie Jane Anders
Ann Leckie

Let the reccos fly!

My Monday Mashup radio show is about to start over on at 23:00 UTC

A long shot, because Masto seems to be a magical place where long shots work: does anyone want old copies of Cycling UK magazine from the past few years? Will post (within the UK) if you either refund me the postage or donate the equivalent to a charity of your choice.

Otherwise I'll just put them in the recycling.

It's that time of the week again!

I'll be doing my Monday Mashup radio show over on at 23:00 UTC

Got a new show name and backing theme tune now lads, we're in the big leagues now.

Until today, the record for "hottest day of the year so far" was January 1st, followed in second place by January 2nd.

I don't know why I'm obsessing over this bullshit, I guess I'm a bit warm or something.

Yes, it was warm in Melbourne today. That's an accurate piece of information ... but labelling it "the hottest day of the year so far" on January 11th seems a bit over the top.

Australian news or essay/analysis companies that aren't just impotent outrage factories recommendations? I like a lot of what Schwartz media puts out, it tends to be considered and avoids reporting on the pointless random tragedy stuff. That's the only company I know that does aus specific writing though.

There was a tag about #CatBellies and I finally got one of my #Cats exposing their tummy.

I forget if I asked this already but are there cassette tape nerds here? That seems like it might be too hipster for the fedverse honestly. I have a Denon DRM-710 that needs service. It looks like people liked them, even though it was only made for two years? That's a little weird

I don't think I can deny I really need a good jigsaw any longer. I might have to go out and get one tomorrow.

Well, my new radiator just arrived. Looks good, all the bits seem to be in the right places and it's the right size.

Guess I need to take the front off my car this week sometime, then. What could possibly go wrong?

This is a public service announcement.

Monday is cancelled.

Go home everyone.

Just... go home.

Can always count on The Guardian to give it to us straight.
